Rogue cop shot dead after store hold-up

A POLICEMAN was shot dead while his brother, also a policeman, was arrested following a robbery of a convenience store in Tagoloan town, Misamis Oriental, Sunday afternoon, September 18.

Police identified the dead policeman as Police Officer 1 (PO1) Nirilvan Tañajura who was assigned at the Gingoog City Police Office.

The suspect’s elder brother, PO1 1 Whylder Tañajura, who has been detained at the Tagoloan Police Station, is supposedly undergoing PNP scout training at the Regional Public Safety Battalion (RPSB)-Northern Mindanao in Camp Capistrano, Gusa, Cagayan de Oro City.

Police investigators said the two suspects entered the NSM Minimart at Poblacion Tagoloan and declared a hold-up, in the process carting away an undetermined amount of cash.

The brothers then fired their firearms on their way out.

Once outside the store, one of the store’s caretakers shot at the two suspects, killing Nirilvan and slightly wounding Whylder at the back.

A police forensics team from the Scene of the Crime Operatives (Soco) recovered two caliber .38 revolvers and one police-issued Glock 17 pistol.

Doctor Christian Caballes of the Soco said a paraffin test will be conducted on the suspects.

"Two fired bullets of 9mm were recovered inside the store. Pagtingin natin mayroong laman na granada dili mabuklat ang whole bag at EOD na ang mag-responde nito,"Caballes said.

Senior Superintendent Manuel Sukarno Alvarez, Misamis Oriental Provincial Police Office director, said the provincial police office will not tolerate policemen engaged in criminal activities.

"Appropriate charges will be filed against the officer at fault. As so with some of the PNP involved in illegal drugs,"Alvarez said.

Alvarez also urged victims of the brothers to visit the Tagoloan police station and identify the surviving suspect.

Drug bust

A target-listed drug personality and 10 other drug suspects were arrested over the weekend by the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG)-Northern Mindanao in a drug bust operation at Celrai, Puntod, Cagayan de Oro City.

Police identified the primary target as Rommel Mag-away alias Omi, 38, who is said to be maintaining a drug den in the area.

Senior Police Officer 4 Noel Oclarit, City Executive Senior Police Officer of CIDG-CDOC, said while authorities were executing the drug bust, several others were discovered having a pot session prompting the policemen to execute the arrests.

The CIDG-Northern Mindanao identified the suspects as Benjie, Clinton and Jay Labta, Jose and Joselito Jamis, Mary Ann Bitor, Joel Galos, Ramil Carnado, Ismael Dimasi and six minors.

"While nagpalit mi sa target, na discover naa nag pot session, nagkatibulaag na ang mga tawo maong gidala nato for investigation," Oclarit said.

Oclarit said the drug suspects have undergone drug tests to verify and determine if they have been using illegal drugs.

"Naa nay identified nga ma-charge for visiting drug den and after pag-gawas sa result sa crime lab diha madetermine kinsa tong gagamit sa droga," Oclarit said.

Seized from the suspects, policemen said, were six pieces of assorted sizes of plastic sachets containing suspected methamphetamine hydrochloride, locally known as "shabu," worth P68,000 and other drug paraphernalia.
