THE University of the Visayas (UV) Green Lancers snapped a two-game slid with an emphatic forceful 72-59 win over the University of Cebu (UC) Webmasters in the 2016 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) college basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum last night.
It was the Green Lancers’ seventh win in 10 games ending a two-game slide that include losses to the University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) Jaguars and the defending champions University of San Carlos (USC) Warriors.
It was a string of losses for the Lancers, who were at those times playing without the presence of two vital cogs - team captain Joshue Segumpan and shooter Tristan Albina.
Segumpan only played in the second half against the Warriors, while Albina was totally absent in those two losses due to viral fever that hospitalized him for two days.
Last night, Segumpan was back at the helm and his production earned him the best-player of the game award after finishing with 11 points, a rebound and three steals and went 3-of-6 from the three-point area.
Albina, meanwhile, was as as deadly as ever especiall from beyond the arc.
"Albina is still in recovery, while Segumpan can already run down the court well. What we are trying to do now is to limit our unforced errors as prepare for the quarterfinals," UV head coach Gary Cortes told Sun.Star Cebu.
UV engaged UC in a nifty exchange of baskets in the first quarter leading only by two points, 19-17, at the end of the first quarter but broke the game wide open a the end of the first half.
A 20-11 binge in the third period put UV beyond reach and on Albina's triple at the 4:44 mark of the fourth, the Lancers built a 67-43 lead.
UC managed to outscore UV 16-5 but were futile as UV had the game in the bag to reclaim the second place in the team standings, while handing UC its eighth loss in 11 games.
In the event UV and USJ-R will finish the elimination round with identical standings - the Lancers will get the No.2 spot as they hold a higher winning margin over the Jaguars in their head-to-head match.
Basieru Sackor scored 12 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Rey Segumpan and Alfred Codilla had nine points each for UV.
