MMDA on alert for Typhoon Ruby

THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) was placed under blue alert on Saturday in anticipation of the effects of Typhoon Ruby (Hagupit) in the capital region.

Under blue alert, MMDA Chairman Francis Tolentino said half of the agency's personnel are ready to be deployed for crowd control and search and rescue operations.

According to the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa), Ruby will slightly affect Metro Manila on Monday with its rains expected to cause flooding in coastal and low-lying areas.

"Double our preparation, that’s what we’re doing. Kaysa naman mabulaga tayo,” Tolentino said.

He said flood control will also be under the MMDA's watch.

The MMDA chief said he also ordered the rolling down of billboards and tarpaulins to avoid trouble during strong winds.

He added the Pasig Ferry service operation is suspended from Saturday to Wednesday, December 10.

Earlier, Local Government Secretary Manuel Roxas II said all Metro Manila local government units are prepared for Ruby's onslaught. (Sunnex)
