46 schools vie for 2011 UniGames crown in Capiz

MANILA -- Athletes from 46 colleges and universities in the country will converge in Roxas City as the 16th edition of the Philippine University Games (UniGames) formally kicks off on Sunday at the Colegio de la Purisima Concepcion.

Athletes will try to outdo one another in fourteen sports events, including basketball, football, volleyball, athletics, swimming, lawn tennis, badminton, table tennis, taekwondo, billiards, and chess, among others.

Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) chairman Ritchie Garcia is the special guest of honor during the opening ceremony set at 5 p.m. at the Capiz gymnasium.

A welcome dinner and fellowship for all delegation heads, officials, team managers, and other guests will be held shortly after.

Among the schools seeing action are Ateneo de Manila, De La Salle, University of the Philippines-Diliman, Adamson, National University, University of the East, University of Santo Tomas, Holy Angel University, Mindanao State University, St. Louis University and West Negros University, among others.

“The UniGames enables provincial athletes the opportunity to be discovered and eventually, make it to the national pool, all the way to the national team of their chosen discipline,” Garcia said. (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
