THREE high-ranking cadres and four other members of the New People’s Army (NPA) were killed an encounter with the Philippine Army’s 302nd Infantry Brigade and 3rd Infantry Division (ID) in Barangay Tapi, Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental, on Sunday, April, 27, 2025.

The fatalities were identified as Reniel Locsin Cellon alias Kupol/Adie, a squad leader and former commanding officer of southwest front (dismantled) SWF (D); Mary Jane Maguilat alias Shonie/Chinchin/Shedi, a vice-squad leader of SWF (D) and former secretary; and Charity Amacan alias Nanay/Nelma/Cara, a squad leader and former Secretary of South Eastern Front SEF (D).

Also killed were Jhon Isidor Supelanas alias Dahlia/Gabby/Ellians/Steph, a political instructor, SWF (D) and a former student leader of Nagkahiusang Kusog sa Estudyante-NKE UP Cebu; Jhonrey Mejares alias Jai/Jr, a political instructor and political guide of SEF (D); Glenda Tinio Mejares alias Gab/Glendela’Ayin/Jao, medical of SEF (D); and alias Pitong, medical, Squad 2 SWF (D).

No casualties were reported on the government side.

Brigadier General Joey Escanillas, commander of the 302nd Brigade, said a combat patrol from the 47th Infantry Battalion first made contact with the communist rebels and identified them to be remnants of the SWF (D) Komiteng Rehiyon–Negros, Cebu, Bohol, Siquijor (KR-NCBS) and South Eastern around 5:30 a.m. Sunday.

He said indicators revealed that the NPA would probably impose a permit to campaign or permit to win fees as they were reported nearing the said barangay.

The operatives recovered six M16 rifles, one M203 grenade launcher attached, one KG9, four Backpacks with personal belongings, and other war materiel.

Escanillas said the clearing operations are ongoing to ensure the complete dismantling of remaining threats.

Escanillas also lauded the troops for their professionalism and bravery in the successful counter-terrorism operation in Kabankalan City.

“This operation was vital in safeguarding the local populace, and its success exemplifies their dedication and skill,” Escanilla said.

Escanillas also expressed his gratitude to the community for their invaluable cooperation, highlighting that their support was instrumental to this victory.

“We urge the public to remain vigilant and continue cooperating with our forces to bring an end to the local communist armed conflict,” he said.

Escanillas said the Armed Forces of the Philippines remains steadfast in its commitment to maintaining peace and security in their area of operation. (MAP)
