Angara calls for creation of cybercrime unit

MANILA -- Senator Edgardo Angara on Tuesday pushed for the creation of a cybercrime unit to investigate and prosecute hackers, pornographers, and identity thieves.

He said the Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT) is currently “toothless” and all it can do is monitor instances of cybercrime.

Under the proposed Cybercrime Prevention Act, which Angara has promised to pass in the 15th Congress, a Cybercrime Investigation and Coordination Center will be created as a full bureau of the CICT.

He said there is an urgent need for a cybercrime unit because of rising incidences of harassment, fraud, and invasion of privacy on the Internet.

Angara added the passage of the Cybercrime Prevention Act will fill gaps in Philippine law.
