Aquino asked to tackle VFA with Obama

MANILA -- As President Benigno "Noynoy" Aquino III prepares for his first foreign trip as head of state to the United States, a party-list group is suggesting an agenda to bring up with US President Barack Obama.

Bayan Muna Representatives Teddy Casiño and Neri Colmenares filed a House resolution for Congress to call on Aquino to abolish the RP-US Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) and demand the withdrawal of US troops in the country.

The lawmakers issued the call in recognition of the 19th anniversary of the Senate's rejection of the RP-US Military Bases Agreement.

House Resolution 409 states that “19 years hence, US forces are back in the country not on a visiting status, but on a permanent basis. The 11-year old VFA has paved the way for the permanent presence of US troops and establishment of facilities throughout the country through the agreement’s vague provisions on the number, duration and stay of troops".

Aquino is set to leave on Monday for his seven-day visit to the US where he will attend the General Assembly of the United Nations, the US-ASEAN meeting, and the signing of the agreement with the Millennium Challenge Corporation. (Kathrina Alvarez/Sunnex)
