Arroyo seeks stiffer penalties for sea polluters

MANILA – Former president turned Pampanga Representative Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is pushing for the criminalization of dumping of wastes into the sea, streams and rivers.

Joined by her son Camarines Sur Representative Diosdado Macapagal-Arroyo, House Bill 1579 or the proposed “Anti Sea-Dumping Act of 2010” was seen as an answer to the worsening water pollution in the country.

"Our seas and oceans, which is one of the main sources of food, are slowly losing their once flourishing biodiversity, slowly causing scarcity, which affects not only consumers, but also fishermen and fisher folks who largely depend on their daily catch to make a living," Arroyo said.

The former leader cited the case of Great Pacific Ocean Gyre in Northern Pacific, which reportedly caused death to sea creatures through countless ways like ingestion, entanglement and poisoning.(Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
