Australia beats China to secure Olympic berth

TOKYO — Australia defeated China 25-12, 25-20, 25-13 to secure a berth for the London Games at a men's Olympic volleyball qualifying tournament on Sunday.

Thomas Edgar scored a team-high 15 points as Australia wrapped up second place in the eight-nation tournament with a 5-2 record and 15 points.

"I want to congratulate my team," Australia coach John Uriarte said. "This team has made an amazing effort in the last few years."

In the final game, Australia opened up a 16-8 lead and three points on serve by Edgar all but finished off the Chinese team. Match point came on a netted serve by Yu Dawei and Adam White, who had 13 points, closed the match with a crosscourt smash.

Serbia, which secured an Olympic berth on Saturday, beat Venezuela 25-14, 25-13, 25-23 to finish the tournament with a perfect 7-0 record.

The winner and the top Asian team are the only teams that secure Olympic berths in the tournament. (AP)
