Bacolod City to host 2012 UniGames

MANILA—The Philippine University Games (Unigames) will return to its roots in Bacolod City next year, a tournament official said Monday.

According to UniGames president Roger Banzuela, the City of Smiles will host the event which traced its beginnings at the University of St. La Salle in 1996.

Bacolod also played host to the tournament featuring the country’s best college athletes in 2007.

Meanwhile, Far Eastern University emerged as this year’s unofficial overall champion in Roxas City following their earlier victories in athletics, women's football, and women's chess.

In men’s basketball, Ateneo de Manila regained the crown they lost last year after subduing West Negros University, 76-62, in the finals.

Justin Chua, whose family hails from Bacolod City, topscored for the Eagles with 22 points, while sophomore guard Juami Tiongson added 15.

Tonino Gonzaga, and Bon Jovi Cipriano chipped in nine and seven markers, respectively for the seven-time UAAP champions, who led by as many as 14 in the second quarter, 47-33.

Fil-Am Jonathan Evangelista sizzled for 25 points in a losing cause for the Mustangs.

In the women’s event, Adamson survived the gritty challenge of College of St. Benilde, 63-56, to retain the title. (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
