THE Bacolod City Council has approved a resolution enjoining pedestrians to strictly observe traffic rules and regulations to prevent road accidents.
The resolution was authored by Councilor Em Ang, chairperson of the City Council committee on history, culture and arts.
Ang said that pedestrian safety is a top priority in the city.
She said the recent incidents of road accidents involving pedestrians have become a major concern.
"It is essential to promote road safety awareness and education among pedestrians," Ang added.
Ang noted that the city's traffic enforcement agencies are directed to intensify their efforts in enforcing traffic rules and regulations related to pedestrian safety.
Ang urged all pedestrians to strictly observe traffic rules and regulations, including crossing streets only at designated pedestrian crossings or intersections, obeying traffic signals and pedestrian signs, avoiding distractions like using mobile phones or taking photos while walking, and wearing visible clothing or reflective materials when walking during hours of darkness or inadequate lighting.
She also advised the pedestrians to exercise extreme caution when walking in areas with inadequate lighting or heavy vehicle traffic.
Ang disclosed that the city's public information office is also directed to launch a public awareness campaign to promote road safety and responsible pedestrian behavior. (MAP)
