FOLLOWING the activation of the Matab-ang Water Treatment Plant in Barangay Granada, Bacolod City, Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez said the city’s water supply increased from 76 million liters per day (MLD) to 80 MLD.

Benitez said on Tuesday, May 6, PrimeWater, with its joint venture partner, Bacolod City Water District (Baciwa), activated its lines from Matab-ang River in Talisay City to its water treatment plant in Barangay Granada.

“Supposedly, the target was between April 24 and 27, but they only finalized it on May 6,” he said.

The PrimeWater management said the activation of the Matab-ang water treatment plant will address the current demand of the city by providing 3 MLD, increasing to 6 MLD within the year.

They said the additional water supply will improve the supply of approximately 5,000 households in Bacolod, particularly in Barangays 27, 28, 30, Estefania, Villlamonte and Mandalagan.

“This project is just one of the initiatives and developments we are implementing together with our joint venture partner, Baciwa, to ensure a more stable water supply that we provide to our consumers,” the PrimeWater management said.

The new water development project involves constructing a transmission line spanning about 1 kilometer from the plant to the injection point in a 2.6-million-gallon reservoir in Loygoy, which will then be distributed to each household.

The mayor earlier formed a task force to fast-track efforts for the energization of the Matab-ang River water supply project to address water shortage in Bacolod City.

Benitez said in 2024, the existing water supply of Baciwa-PrimeWater had decreased by 15 MLD, which is almost 12 percent.

Aside from the Matab-ang River, he said the Bacolod Bulk Water Inc. (BBWI), water supplier of Baciwa-PrimeWater, is also set to finish its inter-connection with the Caliban River in Murcia.

“This new development will also give us more water supply for the consumers in Bacolod City,” Benitez said.

The mayor urged the public to conserve water and also assured residents that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure enough delivery of water supply. (MAP)
