Coconut plantations in Barangays Prosperidad, Codcod, and Quezon in San Carlos City were reported to be infested with the “cocolisap,” a coconut scale insect, identified by the City Agriculture’s Office (CAO) on Wednesday, Sept. 13.

A team of Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) representatives paid courtesy to City Mayor Renato Gustilo to inform him regarding the infestation and the conduct of a site visit.

The team was led by PCA Regional Manager Dr. Niel Melencion with Division Chief Engr. Serafin Auster Layog IV of PCA Negros Occidental office, Division Chief III Johana Orense and Technical Staff Drelyn Sambade of Davao Research Center with Farm Superintendent Prudencio Bayawa Jr., accompanied by Senior Agriculturist Juanito Mendoza of CAO.

Melencion said the site visit to infested areas would help them determine what particular species are infesting the coconut plantation, the scope of affected areas, and mitigation measures to contain the spread.

He also shared the benefit of establishing a laboratory in the city so biological control (biocon) agents will be developed that can stop the spread of cocolisap.

Gustilo recommended the PCA representatives to submit a proposal for the establishment of a biocon laboratory and assured them that the local government supports the project.

Gustilo also asked for assistance from the PCA in revitalizing the coconut industry in San Carlos City given the vast areas suited for coconut plantation, which Melencion is eager to help with through the different programs and projects of PCA.

Bayawa said they are willing to be trained on how to run the Biocon laboratory if possible. He also cited the status of the coconut plantation in Brgy. Prosperidad is still manageable.

He also said that Provincial Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson released an executive order establishing emergency measures to control and manage the massive infestation of the coconut pest, particularly in the cities of Bago and La Carlota as well as the municipalities of Murcia and La Castellana.

Moreover, the governor designated the Philippine Coconut Authority as the lead agency that would collaborate with local government units, partner agencies, and barangays with the support of the provincial government through the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist. (PR)
