PVO: Supply of meat products in NegOcc enough

SUPPLY of meat products in Negros Occidental remains steady amid the upcoming Christmas and New Year celebration, an official of the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) said.

Dr. Ryan Janoya, head of the Animal Health and Meat Inspection Services of the PVO, Friday, December 20, said the province has abundant supply of meat products especially pork.

Janoya said there was a lower demand of pork during the previous months mainly due to the “scare” created by African Swine Fever (ASF).

“Starting December, pork demand has started to increase,” he said, adding that the ASF scare has eventually died down as Negrense consumers realized that local pork products are safe for public consumption.

The demand for meat products, especially pork, really peaks during holiday season, Janoya also said.

In terms of price, the PVO reported that, as of last week, almost all commodities remain steady except chicken which increased by P0.3 per kilogram.

Current average price of pork is also the same, at P220 per kilogram.

Janoya said consumers may expect that starting next week until the end of the month prices will start to move up.

“This is the time where the demand is really at peak,” he said, adding that “though, there will only be a slight increase on the prices of meat products.”
