MANILA –A Cebuano was recently named as the National Collegiate Player of the Year for powering his team to a semifinal finish at the Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) in 2010.
The 6-foot-10 Junemar Fajardo of University of Cebu edged his Manila-based counterparts for the prestigious award, which was won in 2009 by top PBA rookie Nonoy Baclao.
Although the Webmasters fell to the claws of eventual two-time champion Ateneo Blue Eagles last November, Fajardo sashayed his way to finish with a game-high 30 points while hauling 15 boards.
"I think he should have been playing for the national team but I would say he is definitely a PBA-material," Ateneo mentor Norman Black said.
Aside Fajardo, the top four teams of the PCCL Sweet 16 received cash prizes.
Ateneo got P500,000 for the school and P400,000 for team members, Adamson University P200,000 each for the school and the team members, La Salle P100,000 each, and University of Cebu P50,000 each.(Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
