FACE-TO-FACE classes in La Carlota City, Negros Occidental were suspended on Tuesday, April 8, 2025, following the eruption of Mount Kanlaon.

Residents in the town were also encouraged to wear masks to prevent respiratory ailment caused by the ash fall.

Mount Kanlaon, a stratovolcano in Negros Island, erupted anew on Tuesday, spewing an ash plume 4,000 meters high.

Tuesday’s explosion was the third eruption of the volcano. The first was recorded in June 2024, followed by another in December 2024.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the eruption on Tuesday started at 5:51 a.m. and ended at 6:47 a.m.

The ash plume reached a height of 13,123 feet (4,000 meters) and drifted southwest to west. Ash fall and a strong sulfur smell were reported in Barangay Cubay, La Carlota City.

Phivolcs said all local government units are advised to evacuate the six-kilometer radius from the summit of the volcano.

Phivolcs and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) also urged the residents to stay alert and follow official advisories.

Meanwhile, the management of La Carlota City Water District said the spring sources in Guintubdan and Balagacay have been reportedly decreasing, thus they informed the consuming public, especially those in Barangays Ara-al and Barangay San Miguel, to be guided and store water.

"This is to ensure sufficient supply since the said area may temporarily experience low water pressure. Maintenance personnel are currently working onsite to conduct immediate rehabilitation and still assert causes on the unsual activity occurred on the above said spring sources," the water district said in a statement.

Mount Kanlaon has remained under Alert Level 3, which means that there is a magmatic unrest. (MAP)
