Urban farmers make sweet potato pandesal

LOCAL farmers can also innovate and augment their income by equipping themselves with additional skills that could enable them to survive economically citing the many challenges induced by the Covid-19 pandemic.

The Tukib Upland Farmers Corporation with 20 of its members coming from eight chapters in Negros Occidental underwent a training workshop on "Pandesal Making" using sweet potato and banana flour.

Central Philippines State University (CPSU) in Kabankalan City under President Aladino C. Moraca, PhD, Sheila Ignacio, Dean of College of Business and Management and Flora Lingamen Carpio, PhD, Director of Information and Communication Office facilitated the conduct of the said training to the beneficiaries.

The use of the said ingredients will soon be part of the proposed research to be conducted by the BSHM students of the said school using a proposed title: The Level of Acceptability using sweet potato flour.

Rotary Club of Bacolod-East President lawyer Belinda Siason Gochuico, RCBE - Binalbagan Chapter President Rael M. Lopez, CPSU Office of Research and Extension Services and College of Business and Management, John Deles, Moises Padilla Action Center MPAC Program Anchor supported this livelihood program that will help sectors in the community have additional learning and skills.

CPSU conducted the first training last December 28, 2020, which was attended by farmers within the CPSU community. The recent one was Friday, February 5, 2021.

President Moraca said this training will help the beneficiaries learn additional skills that could also boil down to livelihood opportunities.

When a skill is developed, it becomes the source of a decent income for those who are serious about honing such a skill.

He also thanked the partner Rotary Clubs and organizations for making this training possible.

President Siason-Gochuico and her fellow officers and members were glad to be part of the said endeavor that will surely help the farmers have extra income with the use of this new knowledge and training.

Past District Governor Phil Abello said that he has tasted the best pandesal made by the trainees and he also congratulated them for a job well done.

President Lopez is also hoping that this will be the start of the many pieces of training that could further help the community enhance their livelihood.

Dr. Mae Flor G. Posadas, vice president for research and extension services, said her office is happy in accepting the request made by TUKIB UFC Negros for this training as CPSU is willing to impart this knowledge and skills to those who are willing to learn.

She also thanked all the collaborators of this undertaking.
