21 students feel dizzy while doing varnish experiment

ABOUT 21 Grade-6 students felt dizzy after they inhaled the varnish fumes inside their classroom at Education and Training Center School-I in Bacolod City yesterday.

Executive Assistant Jose Maria Vargas, cluster head for City Disaster Risk Reduction Management Office (CDRRMO), said the students were doing a plastic varnish chemicals experiment when the bottle accidentally spilled on the floor at about 8 a.m.

“They felt dizzy, had stomachaches. Some of them were vomiting after inhaling varnish fumes,” he said.

The affected students were evacuated to the open ground or at school gymnasium for the first aid and were transferred to the school clinic.

Of the number, only one student was rushed to a hospital and was later discharged.

“After they were treated, all of them were advised to go home so they can take a rest,” Vargas said.

He said they tasked the school personnel to clean the classroom to eliminate the varnish fumes.

Vargas reminded all the teachers to have safety measures in doing an experiment to avoid a similar incident.
