Another UP Cebu alumna tagged as red

ANOTHER alumna of the University of the Philippines (UP) in Cebu City was tagged a member of the New People's Army (NPA) after troops of the 79th Infantry Battalion of the Philippine Army discovered her diary from their campsite at Barangay Guadalupe, San Carlos City, Negros Occidental on April 16.

In a press release Friday, April 20, Captain Ruel Llanes, civil-military operations officer of the 303rd Infantry Brigade, said a 26-year-old resident of Minglanilla, Cebu, a graduate of Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, is allegedly a member of the Northern Negros Front (NNF).

Military troops recovered her diary after they were able to overrun their camp following an encounter against suspected NPA members in the said village five days ago.

The diary reportedly exposed her trauma and bad experiences during her stay with the communist rebels.

She underwent training at the hinterland area of Himamaylan City in November 2011 before she became a full-fledged member of the communist rebels in 2012.

She was then deployed in the villages of San Carlos in Negros Occidental, and Canlaon City and Vallehermoso town in Negros Oriental.

Brigadier General Eliezer Losañes, commander of 303rd Infantry Brigade, said: "we thoroughly inspected the recovered documents and confirmed that she was with the group."

With such discovery, Losañes encouraged the communist rebels especially the students and the minors who were deprived of their rights to finish their studies and become productive citizens of this country to return to the mainstream society.

“Lay down your arms, return to the folds of the law and avail the government’s Comprehensive Local Integration Program and, live a normal and peaceful life, and do not be deceived by the communist rebels' fake promises of a better future," he said.

Last March, Myles Albasin, 21, of Cagayan de Oro, also an alumna of UP Cebu with a degree of Bachelor of Science in Mass Communication, was arrested together with five others, including two minors after the military received reports about the presence of suspected rebels in Mabinay town, Negros Oriental.

Recovered from the suspects were six high-powered firearms - one M16A1, one M16A1 with M203 grenade launcher, two M4 rifles, one M16, one AG 43 (M16). They also yielded rifle grenades, explosives, warfighting materials, and subversive documents.

They were tested negative for the gunpowder residue. (GYM)
