Bacolod urged to observe International Women’s Month

THE Bacolod City Council approved a resolution enjoining the city government through Mayor Evelio Leonardia to participate in the observance of the International Women’s Month celebration this March 2020, with the Theme “We make change work for women.”

The resolution, authored by Councilor Cindy Rojas, was approved during the regular session of the City Council on Wednesday, March 4.

Rojas said the Philippine Commission on Women board members and inter-agency technical working group identified the theme which shall be used from 2017-2022.

She said the main objective of the observance of the International Women Month is to promote awareness on the rights and social roles of women in the community in maintaining a healthy citizenry.

“There is a need to reinforce empowerment of Bacolodnon women in the city in order to promote productivity,” she added.

Rojas noted that Proclamation No. 224 Series of 1998 declares the first week of March each year as Women’s Week and March 8 as Women’s Rights and International Peace Day.

Proclamation no. 227 series of 1988 provides for the observance of the month of March as Women’s Role in History. Republic act 6949 series of 1990 declaring March 8 of every year as National Women’s Day.

Rojas disclosed that Republic Act 7160 or the Local Government Code of 1991, provides that every local government unit shall exercise the powers expressly granted, those necessarily implied therefrom, and those which are essential to the promotion of the general welfare. (MAP)
