Boracay fire damage pegged at P450,000

A BOARDING house was razed by fire in Barangay Balabag, Boracay Island on Thursday afternoon, October 13, 2022.

Keanno Lim, fire investigator of the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP)-Boracay, said the owner of the boarding house was wounded because of the said incident and was already given medical attention.

The boarding house had 17 rooms, 13 of which were occupied. All 13 boarders were out when the fire occurred.

The fire also partially damaged a hotel and some commercial areas at the back of Holy Rosary Parish in the said barangay.

"We are still investigating the cause of the fire incident. Based on our initial estimate, the damage may have been around P430,000," Lim said in a radio interview.

The BFP's estimate does not include the surrounding buildings affected by the fire.

Among those who responded to the fire incident were personnel coming from the BFP-Boracay, Boracay Fire Rescue Volunteers Group (BFRAV) and other private fire brigades.

Vehicular accident

Meanwhile, the BFRAV also reported that nine tourists including their driver were caught in a vehicular accident in a hilly area of Barangay Yapak, Boracay Island on Wednesday afternoon.

In a report, the e-trike they were riding was overloaded with passengers and the unidentified driver was said to be a neophyte at traversing the area.

The tourists from Metro Manila were supposed to go to a high-end resort on this resort island.

Three of the tourists were brought to the private hospital of their choice in Kalibo as at least one of them had suffered a bone fracture and the two others needed a computed tomography (CT) scan examination. (SunStar Philippines)
