Capitol to ask Pagcor for add’l classrooms

Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson said Monday, September 11, that the provincial government will request additional classrooms from the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor).

Lacson said he asked Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte-Carpio if he could ask for help from Pagcor, adding that he got a positive reply from the country’s second top chief executive.

Duterte-Carpio was a guest at the Teacher’s Day celebration organized by the Department of Education-Division of Negros Occidental at the Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod City on Friday, September 8.

Earlier, the DepEd-Negros Occidental said that the province needs about 1,800 more classrooms to meet the requirements of the new school year.

Former Education secretary Leonor Briones declared that DepEd would not receive any donations or funds from Pagcor.

Lacson said the last donation from Pagcor was a four-storey school building in Hinigaran town.

Even with the help of Pagcor, the backlog of classrooms in Negros Occidental cannot be totally resolved, the governor said.*
