CHR looking for daughter-survivor of Himamaylan massacre

THE Commission on Human Rights is looking for the daughter of the Fausto couple, who was massacred along with their two minor sons in Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental.

Vincent Parra, head of CHR-Negros Occidental, said Monday, June 26, that they want to interview Emily Hermino about the death of her family.

She was the one who reported to the police about the massacre of his parents and two siblings after she found them in their home.

"We left a message to the officials of Barangay Buenavista, Himamaylan City, to inform us if they locate Emily. We also asked the local police for her whereabouts, and they said they have no knowledge of her," Parra said.

It was reported by the Himamaylan Police that Emily is in their custody, but they did not reveal her whereabouts for security reasons.

Parra said they conducted a follow-up investigation about the massacre last week and learned from the Barangay officials of Buenavista that Emilda, one of the victims, had reported the forcible entry of armed men into their home prior to the massacre.

The first incident happened on March 13, 2023, when about eight armed men entered their house. It happened again on March 18, when armed men reportedly wearing military uniforms entered their house again, and again on May 12.

The family was not present in their house in those instances as they were working on a sugarcane plantation and found out that the things inside their house were already scattered and the door was open, he said.

Parra also said that they will check the relationship of Emily to the alleged leader of the New People's Army, identified by the police as Fernando Hermino of Central Negros 2, Komiteng Rehiyonal Negros, Cebu, Bohol, and Siquijor of the CPP-NPA.

The police alleged that Hermino and his 15 comrades were the assailants in the massacre based on their witnesses' statements.

Reports claimed that Emily's husband was allegedly the son of the NPA leader.

Parra said they will conduct a serious investigation on the case and that they will also check on the background of Emilda who is reportedly a member of Indigenous Peoples in Barangay Carol-an, Kabankalan City.*
