Comelec: Voter registration resumes today

THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Bacolod City will resume its voter’s registration Thursday, August 1, for the May 2020 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan (SK) polls.

Bacolod City election registrar Mavil Majarucon-Sia said Wednesday that it’s the presumption of the Comelec that there will be an election in 2020.

“Based on Comelec calendar of record, there will be a barangay and SK elections on May 2020 so we are preparing for that elections and the continuing voter’s registration will start today until September 30,” she said.

She added they are open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. including holidays, and they will accept registrants from aged 15-years old and up since there’s an SK election.

Majarucon-Sia said registrants should bring valid government identification cards (ID) with picture and signature, original and photocopy of birth certificate. If their residence is not stated on the ID, they could bring a proof of their residence or billing statements like water or electric bills.

Comelec is also preparing to deactivate a total of 42,000 registered voters who failed to cast their votes for two previous elections.

Majarucon-Sia said these are voters who failed to cast their votes in previous barangay and SK elections and in 2019 local and national elections.

“The lists will be posted at Comelec office as well as in the 61 barangay halls so they can check their names and to re-apply for the reactivation of their records,” she said.

Since it’s only a two-month registration, Majarucon-Sia urged the registrants to register early to avoid overcrowding on the last day of the registration.

Bacolod City has a total of 312, 816 voters with a total of 353 clustered precincts situated in 45 voting centers.
