In his attempt to save his live-in partner, a construction worker hacked dead his brother-in-law in Ilog town, Negros Occidental at about 11 p.m. Wednesday, October 27.

Killed was Jestoni Ubay, 27, of Sitio Manganese in Barangay Dangcalan, chief investigator Police Master Sergeant Jerome Baloyo said.

Ubay’s sister, Angeline, 19, was also injured.

The elder Ubay died while being rushed to Lorenzo D. Zayco District Hospital in Kabankalan City while his sister is still confined at the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital (CLMMRH) in Bacolod City.

Suspect Danilo Anilab, 23, the live-in partner of Angeline, is now detained at the Ilog town police.

Investigation showed that the elder Ubay was drunk and figured in an argument with his mother Chona, whom he later tried to stab.

When Angeline saw this, she tried to wrest the knife from his elder brother, Baloyo said.

The woman shouted for help and a few minutes later, Anilab arrived armed with a cane cutter and hacked his brother-in-law on his right thigh, he said.

Baloyo added that Anilab also accidentally hacked his live-in partner in her leg.

It took some time before the victims were brought to the hospital as their house is located about eight to 10 kilometers from the main highway, the police said.

As of yesterday, October 28, no charges have been filed yet against Anilab.

In Talisay City, meanwhile, policemen are still investigating the cause of the death of Leo Benes, whose decomposing body was found inside a hut at a cock farm in Barangay Cabatangan about 12:30 a.m. yesterday, October 28.

Ramon Carmelo, who owns the cock farm situated at Sitio Cabacahan, told the police that he decided to visit Benes, 37, of Barangay Mailum in Bago City and works as overseer of his property, after he has not seen the latter for almost three days.

Carmelo said that when he went to the hut where Benes was staying, there was a foul odor emanating from it and when he peeped through the door, he saw Benes lying lifeless on the floor, prompting him to seek police help.

Investigation showed that the victim sustained a wound on his head.*
