Cop dies, 3 hurt in motorcycle-trike collision

A policeman died in a collision along the highway of Barangay 5 in Isabela town, Negros Occidental at about 5:30 p.m. Sunday, January 30.

Killed was Patrolman Michael Cuanico, 28, of Crossing Payao in Binalbagan town, Negros Occidental, Isabela Municipal Police Statio chief investigator Senior Master Sergeant Roberto Ballon said.

Initial investigation conducted by Corporal Reno Villareal showed that Cuanico, who was assigned at the town police station, was heading south of the road on his motorcycle when he tried to overtake another motorcycle.

Unfortunately, Cuanico’s motorcycle collided with the approaching tricycle driven by Melmar Tubrea, 17, of Barangay Rumirang in Isabela.

Due to the impact, both Cuanico and Tubrea both fell into the pavement which resulted in their injuries.

Cuanico was rushed to Ignacio Lacson Arroyo Sr. Memorial District Hospital where he died while being treated while Tubrea only sustained bruises, Ballon said.

Tubrea’s pregnant mother Emily, 35, and his sibling Melnases, 9 also both sustained minor injuries from the accident, he also said.

Tubrea will be referred to the Social Welfare and Development Office of the town as he is a minor.*
