DRRMO to assist 61 barangays for disaster management plan

THE Bacolod City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO) will assist the 61 barangays to make a disaster management plan.

Dondon Parandas, officer-in-charge of DRRMO, said yesterday, June 28, that starting July 2, they will start visiting all the barangays to give the new template for Barangay Disaster Risk Reduction Management Plan (BDRRMP).

Parandas, who attended the Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (RDRRMC) meeting yesterday at the Government Center, said the RDDM issued the new template for the BDRRMP.

"We should follow the new template on how to do the disaster management plan or to utilize the calamity fund," he said.

He added after the approval of Republic Act No. 10121 or the Philippine Disaster Risk Reduction Management Act of 2010, the DRRMO already started to help the barangays to make a temporary template for disaster management plan.

Parandas noted that the barangay needs an approval from the DRRMO before they could utilize their calamity fund, but some of the barangays failed to submit their disaster management plan.

"We were tasked to check the disaster management plan of every barangay to determine if it fits the immediate need of their barangay to address the possible calamity or damages," Parandas said.

He said of the total budget of the barangay, five percent of it was allocated for the calamity fund to be used for pre-disaster activities such as training, preparedness, and mitigation projects among others.

Presidential Adviser on Political Affairs Francis Tolentino had earlier urged the soon to be elected Association of Barangay Captains (ABC) president in Bacolod City to make a barangay integrated disaster management plan in the city.

"For the candidate who will win for the ABC president post should sit down with the 60 members of the league to chart the barangay integrated disaster management plan," he said.

He added the barangay integrated disaster management plan is very important in terms of calamity and this will make easy for the City Government to address the calamities such as floods and landslide.
