BACOLOD City Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez has ordered the barangay officials to conduct an inventory of all the backyard hog raisers within their areas of jurisdiction.

City Administrator Atty. Pacifico Maghari III said Thursday, May 18, they already sent a letter to the barangay officials for the conduct of the inventory.

He said the barangays should submit its report to the City Mayor’s Office to determine the status of the backyard hog raisers as well as the vaccination of their animals.

Aside from the barangay officials, he added the city’s task force against African swine fever (ASF) and the City Veterinary Office will also monitor the backyard hog raisers.

Maghari noted that he was informed that at least 20 heads of swine have already died in Bacolod City.

“The inventory is still ongoing and we will wait for the final report of the barangays so that we can determine the cause of death of the pigs,” Maghari said.

After the inventory, he said the city will implement some measures to address the problem.

Benitez earlier said the City Veterinary Office should monitor all the backyard hog raisers to guarantee the safety of the public.

This after hog cholera cases were already reported in Negros Occidental.

City Veterinarian Maria Agueda Trinidad Dela Torre earlier said some pig deaths were recorded in the province due to hog cholera.

She said it’s the responsibility of the hog raisers to have their animals vaccinated.*
