Japanese firm eyeing to invest in recycling facility in Bacolod

A JAPANESE company is now eyeing to invest P1 billion for the construction of a recycling facility in Bacolod City, Administrator Pacifico Maghari III said Tuesday, July 18.

Maghari said the representatives of Keiwa Kogyo Co., Ltd. presented their proposal to the city government at MassKara Hall Tuesday for the putting up of a recycling facility.

He said that during the first State of the City Address (Soca) of Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez, he mentioned the priority projects of the administration which include the environmental development as well as the zero-waste target or the mega recycling facility.

He added that Keiwa Kogyo is one of the proponents for the construction of a recycling facility which could be accomplished through public-private-partnership (PPP) or joint venture.

Maghari noted that the most practical location for the construction of the recycling facility should be near the city’s sanitary landfill in Barangay Felisa.

“For now, they are here to observe to determine if their technology is also doable here in Bacolod. They have a waste segregation facility in Japan then, they will reprocess it into usable plastics,” Maghari said.

Aside from Keiwa Kogyo, he said at least three local companies also presented their proposals to the city for the said project.

“So we are looking for the best proponent that would be advantageous to the city government,” he added.

Moreover, Maghari said if the said project will be materialized, the city will also implement a waste segregation policy.

He said they will ask the assistance of the barangays for the implementation of the “no segregation, no collection policy.”

“The implementation is really a challenge for us,” he added.*
