Kagawad assumes post of slain village chief

THE number one kagawad (councilman) of Barangay 16, Bacolod City assumed the post of the late village chief Nelson Ligaya Jr., who was shot dead by unidentified assailants, effective December 3.

Ma. Joy Maredith Madayag, director of Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG)-Bacolod, said on Tuesday that Erwin Arela went to her office on Monday and inquired the proper procedure.

“It’s automatic that he will take over the post because he is the number one kagawad in the barangay and it’s up to him on when he will take the oath of office in the office of Mayor Evelio Leonardia or the office of Congressman Greg Gasataya,” she said.

She added the barangay council should also pass a resolution recommending any person to complete the seven kagawads with the approval of Leonardia.

Madayag noted that only the mayor can appoint a kagawad to occupy the vacant kagawad post.

On Saturday night, Ligaya was shot dead by four unidentified assailants on two motorcycles in front of his store at Barangay 16.

The gunman and the motorcycle driver who were both wearing face masks then escaped.

Madayag said they will assist the family of Ligaya to process the death benefits claim worth P20, 000.

Meanwhile, the DILG will hold a year-end activity for barangay officials and employees at the SMX Convention Center in Bacolod today.

Madayag said the activity will be attended by 61 village chiefs, kagawads, Sangguniang Kabataan chairman and barangay secretary and treasurer.

She said they will also recognize the top performing barangays.
