Man shoots nephew then kills self

A MALE teenager died while his mother was injured after they were shot by their relative, who then killed himself, at Barangay Banquerohan in Cadiz City, Negros Occidental Thursday morning, August 16.

Police identified the fatalities as JV Calida, 14, a Grade 9 student, and his uncle Joemarie Calida, 49, both residents of the said village.

Wounded was JV’s mother Sally, 52, also of the said barangay.

Chief Inspector Rocky Desear, city police chief, said Joemarie went to Sally’s house around 7 a.m. to inform her about her husband’s failure to pay the motorcycle they assumed from him two months ago. A heated argument then ensued between them.

Joemarie, who was just living at the back of Sally’s house, took his .22 caliber magnum and fired at the female victim.

JV was outside of their house and was not able to see Joemarie and Sally arguing. However, when Sally was able to go inside their house to hide, the suspect called his nephew and also shot him on the head at close range.

Then he tried to look for Sally again, but when he did not find her, Joemarie went to the sugarcane plantation and shot himself on the head. He died on the spot.

JV was rushed to a hospital, where he was declared dead while Sally was brought to Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital in Bacolod City. She was later discharged.

She sustained a minor gunshot wound on her left ear.

Police recovered from the scene Joemarie’s .22 caliber magnum with three fired cartridges and a live ammunition.

Desear said the suspect had no history of a suicide attempt but had a previous misunderstanding with Sally, who is the wife of his brother.

Joemarie’s sibling also did not know that he owns a gun because he was just living alone.

Desear said they are still conducting an investigation as to the other possible motive that caused the suspect to commit the incident.
