NPC denounces shooting of broadcaster

THE Negros Press Club (NPC), which is based in Bacolod City, Negros Occidental, has denounced another killing attempt against a member of the media.

Edmund Sestoso, an anchorman in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental, was shot by men on board a motorcycle at Barangay Daro Monday morning, April 30.

Sestoso, who was on his way home after anchoring his block time program over dyGB 91.7 FM, sustained gunshot wounds in his breast, arms, and legs.

The victim is now critical at Silliman University Medical Center.

Renato Duran, president of NPC, said the press club condemns the attack against the radioman, supporting claims that it might be related to his commentary job.

The dastardly act is also a form of intimidation and curtailment on the role of the media as a channel of information to the public, he said.

“We call on authorities for a speedy resolution to the case. We hope that the perpetrators will be brought to justice immediately,” Duran said, as he again called on members of the press to maintain vigilance and always uphold ethical and responsible media practice.

NPC, the oldest press club in the country, believes that concerns against the media, particularly on their works, should be brought to proper venue instead of resorting to violence.
