Officials urged to exercise extreme caution in cyber dealings

The Bacolod City Council has approved a resolution encouraging all public officials, government employees, department agencies, and those persons clothes with public interest to exercise extreme caution in their cyber dealings including the use of social media.

The resolution was authored by Councilor Jason Villarosa, chairperson of the City Council committee on tourism.

He said it is already public knowledge that the Masskara Festival Facebook page has been hacked and been posting inappropriate content.

He added that recently, the social media account of 3rd District Representative Jose Francisco "Kiko" Benitez has succumbed to the same situation.

Villarosa stressed that social media accounts of public officials may now be deemed extensions of their offices where they can maintain their connection with the general public.

"It is observed that the hacking has now been frequent, not

only targeting private individuals but those in important positions," Villarosa said.

He said the help and assistance of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) are sincerely requested to prevent such adverse effects on the harmonious dealings with the public sector on one hand, and the reading public on the other.*
