P40 million allocated for Metro Bacolod District Jail

THE Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) in Manila has allocated a budget of P40 million for the construction of a four-storey jail facility at Metro Bacolod District Jail (MDBJ) male dormitory in Barangay Handumanan, Bacolod City.

Chief Inspector Norberto Miciano, jail warden, said Sunday, June 3, that the jail is currently congested with 779 inmates.

Ideally, a jail facility should only have 250 to 300 inmates.

With the construction of the new building, Miciano said it will address the congestion problem of the jail.

It will be constructed at the back of the existing jail, covering 10,000 square meters.

They are also proposing to seek an accreditation from the Department of Health (DOH) to utilize the facility as a drug rehabilitation center that can cater drug dependents and inmates with drug cases.

Miciano said they are waiting for the go signal from the national and regional headquarters for the groundbreaking.

He said the construction of new jail facilities is part of the BJMP’s solution to the problem of congestion in all jails nationwide.

Miciano said the MBDJ–Special Intensive Care Area (Sica) will also be given a budget for the said facility per approval of the national bureau. (GYM)
