FOLLOWING the five volcanic earthquakes monitored by the Provincial Disaster Management Program Division (PDMPD) on Thursday, June 9, Mount Kanlaon in Negros Island is now being closely monitored.

Zeaphard Caelian, head of PDMPD, said the volcano remained under Alert Level 1 as low-level unrest has been observed based on the monitoring of the Department of Science and Technology and the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

PDMPD also reported that 151 metric tons of sulfur dioxide flux is being emitted by Mount Kanlaon and 400 meters tall weak emission of steam-laden plumes were also detected on it.

The volcano’s edifice has also slightly inflated, it said.

Caelian said phreatic explosions may occur anytime with the present status of Mount Kanlaon, so entry to the four-kilometer permanent danger zone or PDZ and flying of any aircraft close to the volcano are prohibited.
