Possible repairs, de-clogging of drainage system discussed

BACOLOD City Representative Greg Gasataya sat with Mayor Evelio Leonardia and discussed possible repairs or de-clogging of drainage system in the city streets that connect to the national road.

This came after the recent flooding in some areas of Bacolod.

Gasataya received most of the feedback through the mainstream and social media regarding the recent flooding.

The netizens have expressed all their sentiments, positive and negative, and were all taken with a positive response, he said.

The posts in the social media have mirrored the civic-mindedness of Bacolodnons to help their government officials find ways to address the problems, he added.

Gasataya pointed out that the drainage projects that his office has facilitated were all located along the national roads and highways.

Lateral streets that connect to the main highways belonged to the jurisdiction of the city government of Bacolod, thus, clogged drainage (culvert pipes) situated in the city streets could not be repaired by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), he added.

He said DPWH has no flood control project along Araneta Streets which also experienced flooding during the heavy rains.

Meanwhile, Gasataya recently told DPWH officials and the contractor of the P60 million drainage projects along Lacson Street in Bacolod City to ensure the safety of motorists by putting up the necessary safety measures like barriers and signage that will deter road accidents, especially during night time.

This came after another car accidentally plunged into the deep excavated portion of the drainage project along 21st Lacson Street.

This is actually the fourth vehicle that accidentally fell on the excavated portion of the drainage project, Gasataya said.

Accidents happen. But everybody should always be concerned about one’s safety, he added.

“I called the attention of the DPWH before the accident happened. Assistant District Engineer Leah Jamero was tasked to look into the incident and likewise the compliance of the contractor on the safety measures,” he said.
