Prices of chicken, egg increasing

Prices of dressed chicken and eggs are rising, said Provincial Veterinarian Placeda Lemana on Thursday, October 5.

She said the increase in prices is expected because the holiday season is already fast approaching.

Small-sized eggs increased by 25 centavos, from P7,00 to P7.25; medium-sized, P7.50 to P8.00; large-sized eggs increased by 10 centavos per piece; and 50 centavos increase for extra-large sized eggs.

For dressed chicken, Lemana said the highest price based on their monitoring is in Victorias City at P225 per kilo, while the lowest is in Murcia at P170 per kilo.

For pork, Lemana said the lowest price is in Moises Padilla at P210 per kilo, while in some areas, including Bacolod City, its price is at P300 per kilo.

"We have enough supply of eggs, chicken, and pork," Lemana emphasized.

She said the increase is due to high demand.

Based on monitoring, a volume of broiler chicks is arriving, and the dressed chicken supply is between 60,000 to 70,000 daily.

Lemana also said there is also enough supply of pork, especially piglets for roasting (lechon), despite the recent swine deaths due to African swine fever and other diseases.

She also believed that the province would soon fully recover from such hog deaths. Based on monitoring, there have been no more hog deaths in the province since August 14, Lemana added.

She also encouraged backyard hog raisers to start raising pigs, but they have to make sure that their area is already free from the virus and that they follow the protocol.*
