THE price of liveweight pigs is already increasing while the price of eggs, especially the medium to extra large sizes, slightly dropped, Provincial Veterinarian Placeda Lemana said Wednesday, August 9.

"The average price of eggs is at P7.40 per piece while the extra large eggs are priced at P9.40 per piece," she said.

Hog raisers in the province, she said, continue to sell live pigs outside of the province.

The average live weight price for pigs is at P140-P150 at the auction market while pork in Bacolod City maintained its price from P280 to P290 per kilo, but its average cost outside Bacolod City is at P240 per kilo.

"We are also regulating the price because of the complaints by the backyard raisers that their hogs are bought at a lower price because of hog deaths, but prices in the market are still high," Lemana said.

She further said that by the fourth quarter of this year, because of the low supply of pork, prices may also increase.

Hog raisers have sold their pigs prematurely due to fear of hog diseases.

"That's why we would like to encourage raisers to sell their supply here in our province so that we will not have a shortage," Lemana said.

She also said that hog deaths in the province have been contained because of the protocols, quick response, and testing in the province.

She said that on Monday, August 7, there were only eight reported hog deaths, and six on Tuesday, August 8.

Lemana also said that the province will also give out vaccines against hog diseases. The first to receive the vaccines are hog raisers in District Six.

The province has initially procured 70,400 doses of vaccines with

2,500 doses for the first delivery. It will be given free to hog raisers, she said.*
