SAN Carlos City is building a new abattoir within the premise of the Agricultural Center and Integrated Demonstration Farm in So. Medina, Brgy. Rizal.

The project costs P49,891,478.67, 80 percent of which funded by The World Bank while the remaining is a counterpart by the Department of Agriculture-Philippine Rural Development Project (DA-PRDP) and the Provincial Government of Negros Occidental.

City Mayor Renato Gustilo, Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson, Vice Mayor Christopher Carmona and Jose Albert Barrogo, DA-6 OIC-Regional Executive Director, led the ceremonial groundbreaking and laying of the time capsule last May 10.

Engr. Barrogo said PRDP provided Negros Occidental with a total of P1.6 Billion project cost ( P1.1 Billion for the infrastructure and P500 Million for the enterprise), where funds for the construction of slaughterhouses in Municipality of Cauayan, Municipality of Hinoba-an, Municipality of Murcia, San Carlos City, Municipality of Toboso, and Municipality of Binalbagan are taken.

Engr. Barrogo challenged Mayor Gustilo to avail more projects from PRDP and to impose needed improvements in the abattoir. He also looked forward to finishing the said project before 2023 ends and extending more projects in San Carlos City.

Moreover, Gov. Lacson said the new slaughterhouse has a wastewater treatment facility that could assure consumers and residents of clean products compared to the old slaughterhouse in Brgy. 1.

He hoped that San Carlos City would take the challenge of Barrogo and was grateful to have been an instrument in realizing the project.

Mayor Gustilo and Vice Mayor Carmona thanked Lacson for granting the project to San Carlos City that could provide clean and safe products to consumers.

Carmona added the slaughterhouse would not only ensure the food basket but would contribute to the environmental impact of waste products; expect safety and minimize said impact thru the use of technologies and research in transforming the waste products into high-value-added products or energy production.

Carmona also said the city would be one giant step closer to fulfilling its economic development potential when the project is finished. (PR)
