THE City Government of Bacolod will mark the 122nd Philippine Independence Day ON June 12 with a “simple celebration” at the public plaza in light of the Covid-19 pandemic.

There will be elaborate programs, parade and float, according to City Councilor Simplicia Distrito, chairperson of the Independence Day Celebration.

She said Mayor Evelio Leonardia instructed the committee to plan and organize a simple yet meaningful celebration of Independence Day.

“Although we have this crisis, we should not also forget the sacrifices of our past heroes and Filipino revolutionaries who had offered their blood and labor just for us to enjoy the freedom we have right now,” she added.

The celebration will be attended by Congressman Greg Gasataya as the guest of honor and speaker, Leonardia, Vice Mayor El Cid Familiaran and other city officials, department heads, and other government agencies.

This year’s theme is “Kalayaan 2020: Tungo sa Bansang Malaya, Nagbabayanihan, at Ligtas.

“As we plan things down, we take note of the heath protocols as well as the guidelines of the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) against coronavirus disease (Covid-19) that the attendees of the celebration will only be 50 percent of the seating capacity of the venue, which in our case is the Bacolod public plaza,” Distrito said.

The flag-raising ceremony will start at 6:30 a.m. and it will be followed by a program and a wreath-laying ceremony.

“This is the simplest celebration the city ever had for the past years, but what is important is that we will be able to give time to value our national heroes who shed their blood and labor in order for us to enjoy the freedom we have now,” Distrito said.
