IN AN apparent self-defense, a son killed his own father by hacking him at their residence in Barangay Mabini, Escalante City, Negros Occidental around 10 p.m. Saturday, February 26, 2022.

Mariano Aberina, 46, of Sitio Fuentes in the barangay, died on the spot due to multiple hack wounds, Escalante City Police Station chief Lieutenant Colonel Rocky Desear said.

His son, Vickmar Aberina, 20, was rushed to the Vicente Gustilo District Hospital in Escalante City after he also sustained hack wounds caused by his father.

Initial investigation showed that the victim and suspect were having a drinking session when the elder Aberina hacked his son, who managed to wrest the cane cutter and retaliated.

Desaer also explained that since the area where the hacking happened is considered a high-risk area for possible presence of the New People’s Army (NPA), they decided to conduct their investigation on the case Sunday, February 27, instead.

He told SunStar Bacolod that the victim reportedly beats his son and wife whenever he is under the influence of alcohol.

The police official noted that the family of Aberina is no longer interested in filing charges against him and he may be released soon.

Meanwhile, Carlo Lariosa, 20, and his brother Carlito Lariosa, 26, both of Sitio Matira-a in Barangay Rizal, San Carlos City, Negros Occidental, were brought to the local hospital after they were hacked by a certain Jomar Cañete around 4:30 p.m. Sunday, February 27.

Investigation showed that the victims and the suspect argued while they were on bird hunting, prompting Cañete to draw his sword knife and hack the Lariosas.

Cañete fled, bringing with him the weapon he used in hacking the victims, the police said.
