JUNJUN Asis, secretary-general of Sentrong Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operators Negros (SSTONE), said Tuesday, May 16, that they will check the quality of the electric vehicle or e-jeep that will be used as public transportation in Bacolod City.

Asis said they already saw the sample unit of the e-jeep at the Bacolod City Government Center (BCGC), but they need to test the unit so they can decide if they will avail once their provisional authority (PA) will expire in December 2023.

On Monday, May 15, the first unit of electric vehicle of Jiangsu Fengchuen New Energy Power Technology Co. arrived in Bacolod City.

“The unit is beautiful, but we will check it first if it can sustain to be used as public transportation since it’s different from the modernized jeep,” Asis said.

If it can help their livelihood, he said that they are willing to avail the unit as their alternative for the jeepney modernization program of the government.

“As long as our drivers can earn and the unit is affordable, they will support the e-jeep,” he added.

Mayor Alfredo Abelardo Benitez earlier said the Chinese firm sent its first model for a testing to see if its viable, visible, and if it is acceptable for the operators as a better alternative for the jeepney modernization program of the government.

Benitez said the e-jeep can accommodate at least 22 passengers and there should be a charging station as well as the swapping of batteries to continue its operation.

He added each unit will cost at least P2 million and the manufacturing of the units will also depend on the trial run here in Bacolod.*
