Woman dies of suspected meningococcemia in Negros Occidental

THE municipal health officer of Murcia in Negros Occidental, assured the residents of the locality that they have nothing to worry following the death of a woman of suspected meningococcemia.

Dr. Raymund Antonio Maguad, municipal health officer, said they have already given prophylaxis to persons who have close contact with the victim as well as in the barangay and the neighboring areas to avoid contamination.

Maguad said the suspected meningococcemia victim died on Monday after she was brought to the hospital on Sunday.

She manifested symptoms of meningococcemia like a cough, headache, fever and sore throat.

She was also immediately buried on Monday in a cemetery in Murcia.

Maguad said the case could only be confirmed through a laboratory test.

Meningococcemia is defined as dissemination of meningococci into the bloodstream and is considered highly contagious.
