Malacañang backs closure of ‘Hello Garci’

MANILA -- Malacañang agreed on Saturday to conduct a reinvestigation on the “Hello Garci” scandal in a bid to shed light on issues hounding the legitimacy of former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.

Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said President Benigno Aquino III has since supported moves to re-examine the wiretapped conversations between Arroyo and a certain Commission on Elections (Comelec) official sometime in 2004.

u201cAs chairman of an independent commission na kay Chairman (Sixto) Brillantes Jr. yan kung anong gusto gawin ng Comelec in that regard. It is not right for such a major scandal to go on like this without finally getting any closure,” she said.

Brillantes served as election lawyer for the late movie actor Fernando Poe Jr. during the 2004 elections, where Arroyo won by around one million votes. (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
