BACOLOD City Mayor Greg Gasataya urged all Bacolodnons to maintain the cleanliness in the three major public markets in the city.

Gasataya, who led the flushing operations in Burgos, Libertad and Central public markets over the weekend, said this will be a continuous program to ensure the cleanliness in the city’s three major public markets.

“Hopefully, we can all help each other in keeping our surroundings clean,” he said.

The mayor sought the assistance of the Bureau of Fire Protection-Bacolod for the schedule of the flushing operations in the public markets.

Gasataya said it is part of their program to address the clogged drainage in the three major public markets.

On Friday, July 4, the City also started the clearing of the drainage at Barangay 12 to address the flood problem in the area.

On the same day, the personnel of General Services Office and City Engineer’s Office conducted a cleanup drive at the public plaza for the removal of trash, overgrowth, and eyesores that have long overshadowed the beauty of the plaza.

“The people have spoken, and we are acting on it. Our plaza is more than just a park, it is where Bacolodnons gather, rest, and celebrate. We will bring back its dignity, safety, and beauty for everyone to enjoy,” Gasataya said.

Gasataya earlier ordered the pruning of overgrown trees in the public plaza, as well as the removal of old or damaged Christmas lights, repair of non-functional lamps to improve nighttime lighting, urgent siphoning of septic tanks, and repair of comfort rooms.

He also ordered the repainting of structures and removal unnecessary objects at the public plaza, and coordination with the Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority (Tieza) for water fountain rehabilitation.

Gasataya said they will continue this program to ensure that the public plaza will be safe, clean, and vibrant space at the heart of the city’s daily life.

For Bacolodnons, he said the dream of a restored plaza is no longer a wish but a work in progress, with each day of cleanup bringing that vision closer to reality. (MAP)
