Editorial: Enough

LOOKS like the Catholic faithful and the devotees in Bacolod City and Negros Occidental have had enough of the antics of President Rodrigo Duterte especially after he called God stupid.

On Friday, some 1,500 Negrenses joined a procession from Sacred Heart Shrine to the San Sebastian Cathedral for a mass to pray for healing. They also called to stop the killings in the country.

During the procession, the image of the Santo Entierro, or dead Jesus Christ, was paraded by the Catholic faithful. There also was a banner with a message: “Diocese of Bacolod: Adlaw sang Paghinulsol kag Paglalaw. Stop the killings, Pray for Healing."

In the homily of Rev. Fr. Jexon Davao, he gave the word stupid another meaning. He said that God is sincere, truthful, understanding, patient, intelligent and delightful.

"We are using this negative word stupid with a positive note. But of course, everyone is praying for our President who said that our God is stupid. But if his God is perfect, such perfection should have reflected on his being, his ways and words," he said.

Later, Duterte, after the public’s outrage, clarified that his “stupid God” remark was directed at the Catholic Church.

"Ang sabi ko, your God is not my God. Your God is stupid. My God is perfect. Wala akong sinabing torpe yung Ginoo ko. You review the tapes. Di ba sinabi ko, your God is not my God because your God is stupid. Mine has a lot of common sense," he added.

Earlier, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque Jr. said Duterte’s "stupid God" remark may have stemmed from the alleged sexual abuse committed by a Catholic priest against him.

He said the Catholic Church should apologize to Duterte and other victims of sexual abuse committed by priests.
