Palace asks botanist’s family to contest findings

MANILA -- A Palace official on Saturday advised relatives of slain botanist Leonard Co to exhaust legal means to find closure on the untimely death of the renowned scientist.

“The case underwent proceedings at the Department of Justice. They can contest the findings if they feel they have the evidence to back up their claim. There are legal remedies for them to do that,” Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said in a radio interview.

Valte made the disclosure following criticisms on the findings of a three-man fact finding panel that cleared the military from any culpability.

Also on Saturday, the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) called the government’s action a cover-up.

Last Friday, militant group Agham-Advocates of Science and Technology for the People and Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan) said there were no indications of any crossfire in the area. (Virgil Lopez/Sunnex)
