Party-list lawmakers oppose Marcos’ 'hero’s burial'

MANILA -- Members of the progressive party-list bloc have filed a House resolution opposing the renewed proposals to bury former president Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.

House Resolution 1297 strongly opposes proposals to allow a ‘hero’s burial’ for the former dictator, saying such move would be a “grave travesty of justice and monumental historical distortion tantamount to declaring as a hero a dictator”.

“The Marcos dictatorship violently suppressed political dissent, committed crimes against humanity, plundered the country’s resources, and perpetuated US imperialism’s stranglehold on the nation,” the resolution stated.

Earlier, more than 200 lawmakers signed a resolution urging President Benigno Aquino III to allow the burial of his father’s political rival in the Libingan ng mga Bayani in Taguig City.

Aquino had already tasked Vice President Jejomar Binay to decide on the matter. Binay’s recommendations is expected to be submitted to Malacaňang by June.(Kathrina Alvarez/Sunnex)
