THE Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) warned the public against unregistered China-made mosquito coils proliferating in Cebu City market, saying it is hazardous to human health.
Sarah Oriol, FDA-Central Visayas regulation officer, said in a forum at Marco Polo Plaza hotel on Tuesday that they have been conducting inspections on establishments selling these products that are not complying with the FDA standard.
Among the brands of unregistered mosquito coils are Baoma, Suning, Jing Ba, Baolilai, Big Bie Pai, Wawang Mosquito Coils, Tianshi Black Coil, and Baoma Black Coil.
Oriol said these have been sold in markets in Colon St. and Carbon in Cebu City.
She stressed that since these products have no permit from the Bureau of Food and Drugs, they might be hazardous as they may contain more than the standard amount of chemical ingredients they are supposed to contain.
Chemicals that the mosquito coils contain may be lethal when inhaled or accidentally ingested by children, she added.
She said FDA worries that the consumers, especially the poor families, will be affected, as they prefer to buy these coils, which are much cheaper than the other brands. (Jerson B. Rufin and Akimie R. Losorata, PIT interns/Sunnex)
