THE City Sports Office, through the Philippine Taekwondo Association and 2023 Smart MVP Sports Foundation Regional Age Group, held the 3rd Taekwondo Championships Sunday, July 16, at the San Carlos City Auditorium.

At least 361 individuals from 12 cities and municipalities in Negros Occidental and Oriental joined the Taekwondo Championships, where winners received medals and trophies.

The said event consists of Pomsae (forms) and Kyurugi (sparring).

The Pomsae also consisted of three events: individual, mix, and team pomsae, while Kyurugi consisted of five categories: 8-under (toddlers), 9-11 grade school (novice 1 and 2), 12-14 year old cadet (advance novice 1 and novice 2), 15-17 year old juniors (advance novice 1 and 2), and 18-over seniors (advance).

Taekwondo Coordinator Darwin Jumuad Requina said the event enhances the technical skills and scientific techniques of the Taekwondo players.

He added that they are now using an electronic scoring system called the Local Protector and Scoring System (LPSS) for scoring that determines the valid point or points installed in the head and trunk of the players.

Requina also encouraged the youth to play sports instead of gadgets and extended his gratitude to City Mayor Renato Gustilo, Vice Mayor Christopher Paul Carmona, and Executive Assistant IV Jesus Facundo Combate Jr. for the continuous support of every taekwondo event.

Meanwhile, Combate welcomed the participants, coaches, and parents for participating in the Taekwondo Tournament in line with the celebration of the 63rd Charter Anniversary. (PR)
